Fernando Gabriel Tatís Medina Sr. had a respectable and historically memorable 11-year Major League career (1997–2010), but his time in the 1990s is dominated by a baseball feat so rare it is often called unbreakable.
Tatis Sr. debuted with the Texas Rangers in July 1997 after being signed as an amateur free agent in 1992. His legacy in the 1990s, and throughout MLB history, is defined by an incredible, one-of-a-kind accomplishment that occurred on April 23, 1999. As a member of the St. Louis Cardinals, playing against the Los Angeles Dodgers and pitcher Chan Ho Park, Tatis achieved the following in the third inning:
With the bases loaded and no outs, Tatis hit his first career grand slam. The Cardinals continued their rally, with nine other batters coming to the plate. The bases were loaded once again, with two outs. Tatis came up to bat for the second time in the inning, again with the bases loaded. He hit his second grand slam, off the same pitcher, Chan Ho Park.
This spectacular moment cemented Fernando Tatis Sr.’s place in baseball lore, making him much more than a solid third baseman of the late 90s; he is the owner of arguably the most unique hitting record in the sport.
