David Americo Ortiz Arias, famously nicknamed “Big Papi,” is one of the most beloved and dominant designated hitters (DH) in Major League Baseball history. His 20-season career (1997–2016) was defined by prodigious power, clutch hitting, and his integral role in breaking the Boston Red Sox’s infamous “Curse of the Bambino.”
Ortiz spent his first six seasons with the Minnesota Twins before joining the Boston Red Sox in 2003, a move that would fundamentally change the course of Red Sox history.
His legendary postseason performance in the 2004 American League Championship Series (ALCS) against the rival New York Yankees is an iconic part of baseball history. He had back-to-back walk-off hits—a home run in Game 4 and a single in Game 5—helping the Red Sox become the first MLB team to win a series after trailing 3-0. This directly led to Boston’s first World Series title in 86 years.
Ortiz is a 3 time World Series Champion (2004, 2007, 2013), All-Star Selection 10x (2004–2008, 2010–2013, 2016) and a World Series MVP in (2013). He is a member of the 500 Home Run Club and has 7 Silver Slugger Awards.
David Ortiz was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2022 on the first ballot.
