Barry Zito was a highly successful, yet often inconsistent, left-handed pitcher in MLB (2000–2013, 2015) known for his spectacular 12-to-6 curveball.

The Oakland Athletics (2000–2006): “The Big Three”: He was part of the A’s formidable young rotation with Tim Hudson and Mark Mulder. Zito earned the American League Cy Young Award by leading the AL with 23 wins and posting a 2.75 ERA. He was a finesse pitcher, relying on command and his devastating, slow curveball to compensate for a low fastball velocity.

The San Francisco Giants (2007–2013): His time with the Giants was marked by high expectations and eventual redemption. He signed a $126 million contract in 2007, but his performance was inconsistent and drew heavy criticism early on.

Zito became a crucial part of the Giants’ 2012 championship run. His clutch performance in Game 5 of the NLCS, when the team faced elimination, is considered his defining moment of redemption in San Francisco. He also pitched well in Game 1 of the World Series.

Did You Know?  All of Zito’s patience and relentless adjustments culminated in an emotional, career-defining postseason renaissance during the 2012 championship run. Facing elimination down 3-1 to the St. Louis Cardinals in the NLCS, Zito took the mound for a crucial Game 5 at Busch Stadium.

He delivered an absolute masterpiece under maximum pressure, pitching 7.2 scoreless innings, scattering just six hits, and executing a perfect bunt single to drive in a run himself, saving the Giants’ season in a historic 5-0 victory. He followed that up by completely out-dueling Detroit’s prime Justin Verlander in Game 1 of the 2012 World Series, tossing another gem to propel San Francisco to a Fall Classic sweep. The incredible, clutch performance permanently erased years of frustration, cementing him as an immortal folk hero in Bay Area sports history.
