An absolute bulldog on the mound, Roy “The Wizard of Oz” Oswalt was one of the most consistently dominant and durable starting pitchers of the 2000s. Drafted in the 23rd round of the 1996 MLB Draft by the Houston Astros, the unassuming right-hander from Mississippi defied his modest 6’0″ frame by weaponizing an elite, explosive mid-90s four-seam fastball alongside a devastating, heavy 12-to-6 curveball.
While hitters like Jeff Bagwell, Craig Biggio, and Lance Berkman generated the headlines, Oswalt was the competitive spine of the Astros’ pitching staff, anchoring rotation lines that regularly featured future Hall of Famers Roger Clemens and Andy Pettitte.
Postseason Heroics: Oswalt was named the 2005 NLCS MVP after pitching the Astros to their first-world championship appearance in franchise history. He went 2-0 with a microscopic 0.64 ERA against a powerhouse St. Louis Cardinals lineup.
Back-to-Back 20-Win Campaigns: He achieved elite status by capturing 20 wins in both 2004 and 2005, securing his spot among the upper echelon of NL starters.
The Philadelphia Chapter: Traded to the Philadelphia Phillies in 2010, he joined Roy Halladay, Cole Hamels, and Cliff Lee to form the iconic “Four Aces” rotation, going 7-1 with a 1.74 ERA down the stretch.

Did You Know? Long before anchoring a major league staff, Oswalt made his national breakout alongside Ben Sheets on Tommy Lasorda’s legendary Team USA squad at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. He was sensational out of the bullpen and in the rotation, helping secure the Olympic Gold Medal over Cuba and instantly vaulting his prospect profile into the absolute elite tier.
When he arrived full-time in Houston for the 2001 regular season campaign, he bypassed any rookie learning curve. Oswalt put together a dazzling debut season, going 14-3 with a microscopic 2.73 ERA and 144 strikeouts across 141.2 innings. He finished as the runner-up for the National League Rookie of the Year award and instantly proved his high-velocity, low-effort delivery could carve up elite major league lineups.
