David Mark “Dave” Winfield is a baseball icon, widely regarded as one of the greatest all-around athletes in American sports history. His illustrious 22-year Major League Baseball career (1973-1995) was marked by a rare combination of power, speed, defensive excellence, and remarkable durability.
Winfield debuted with the Padres in 1973 and quickly became the cornerstone of the franchise. In 1979, he had a breakout season, leading the National League with 118 RBIs, hitting 34 home runs, and batting .308. This earned him a third-place finish in the NL MVP voting and his first of seven Gold Glove Awards. He was a multiple-time All-Star with the Padres, becoming a beloved figure in San Diego. The Padres later retired his No. 31 jersey.
In 1981, Winfield signed a landmark 10-year, $23 million contract with the New York Yankees, making him the highest-paid player in professional sports at the time. Despite consistently strong offensive numbers, his tenure was famously marred by a public and often bitter feud with Yankees owner George Steinbrenner.
After missing the entire 1989 season due to a back injury, Winfield had a remarkable comeback, earning the Comeback Player of the Year award in 1990 after being traded to the Angels.
Winfield’s lifelong dream of winning a World Series came true in 1992 with the Toronto Blue Jays. At 40 years old, he was the team’s primary designated hitter and provided the crucial two-run double in the 11th inning of Game 6 that clinched the World Series title for the Blue Jays against the Atlanta Braves.
He returned to his home state and reached a significant career milestone with the Twins in 1993, recording his 3,000th career hit. Winfield finished his career with the Cleveland Indians in 1995, contributing to their American League Championship team.
Dave Winfield was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2001 in his first year of eligibility. He chose to enter the Hall wearing a San Diego Padres cap, a decision that underscored his strong connection to the team that drafted him and with whom he began his illustrious career. Beyond his on-field brilliance, Winfield is also highly respected for his pioneering philanthropic work. He established the David M. Winfield Foundation in 1977, becoming one of the first active professional athletes to create a charitable foundation.
