Russell Earl “Bucky” Dent is a former Major League Baseball shortstop. Dent made his MLB debut in 1973 with the Chicago White Sox. From the outset, Dent established himself as a smooth, reliable, and often spectacular defensive shortstop. In 1974, his first full season, he hit .274 and finished second in the American League Rookie of the Year voting. He also earned his first All-Star selection in 1975 with the White Sox.
Dent was traded to the New York Yankees before the 1977 season. He joined a star-studded and often tumultuous Yankees team. He helped the Yankees win back-to-back World Series championships in 1977 and 1978. Dent continued his clutch hitting in the 1978 World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, batting .417 (10-for-24) with 7 RBIs, earning him the World Series MVP award. He was named an AL All-Star again in 1980 and 1981.
After leaving the Yankees in 1982, Dent played briefly for the Texas Rangers and Kansas City Royals before retiring as a player in 1984.
After his playing career, Dent transitioned into coaching and managing. He notably managed the New York Yankees for parts of the 1989 and 1990 seasons.
