George Kenneth “Ken” Griffey Sr. was a prominent Major League Baseball outfielder whose career spanned 19 seasons (1973-1991). While often overshadowed in the public eye by his Hall of Fame son, Ken Griffey Jr., Griffey Sr. was a highly accomplished player in his own right.

Griffey Sr. made his MLB debut with the Cincinnati Reds on August 25, 1973. Playing alongside stars like Pete Rose, Johnny Bench, Joe Morgan, and Tony Perez, Griffey Sr. He was a vital part of the Reds teams that won back-to-back World Series championships in 1975 and 1976. Griffey Sr. was named to the National League All-Star team three times with the Reds (1976, 1977, 1980). He was also the 1980 All-Star Game MVP.

After his successful tenure with the Reds, Griffey Sr. was traded to the New York Yankees. He continued to be a productive player, often splitting time between the outfield and first base. His best season with the Yankees came in 1983 when he hit .306 with 11 home runs. He was traded to the Atlanta Braves during the 1986 season and played there for a couple of years, continuing to hit for a solid average.  Griffey Sr. returned to the Reds in 1988 for a second stint, providing veteran leadership.

In a truly historic and heartwarming moment, Ken Griffey Sr. was acquired by the Seattle Mariners in August 1990, allowing him to play alongside his son, Ken Griffey Jr. They became the first father-and-son duo in MLB history to play on the same team in the same game. They even hit back-to-back home runs on September 14, 1990. Griffey Sr. finished his career with the Mariners in 1991.

Ken Griffey Sr.’s most recognized rookie card is this 1974 Topps #598. This card is part of the colorful 1974 Topps set. It’s a multi-player “Rookie Outfielders” card, featuring Griffey Sr. (with the Cincinnati Reds) alongside Steve Ontiveros, Dave Augustine, and Jim Tyrone.
