Joe Leonard Morgan, often called “Little Joe” due to his diminutive stature (5’7″), was a giant on the baseball field. He was an American professional baseball second baseman who played for 22 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1963 to 1984. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest second basemen of all time and was an integral of the legendary “Big Red Machine” of the Cincinnati Reds.
Morgan began his career with the Houston Colt .45s (later Astros). While he showed flashes of brilliance, he truly blossomed after a pivotal trade. This is where Joe Morgan became a superstar and etched his name in baseball history. Traded to the Reds in November 1971, he became the dynamic heart of a team that dominated the National League. Morgan won consecutive National League Most Valuable Player awards In 1975, he hit .327 with 17 home runs, 94 RBIs, 107 runs, and 67 stolen bases. In 1976, he followed up with a .320 average, 27 homers, 111 RBIs, 113 runs, and 60 stolen bases.
As a central figure of the “Big Red Machine,” Morgan helped lead the Reds to consecutive World Series titles, defeating the Boston Red Sox in an epic seven-game series in 1975 and sweeping the New York Yankees in 1976. Morgan was selected to the All-Star Game 10 times in his career (1966, 1970, 1972-1979), with eight of those coming during his tenure with the Reds.
After retiring as a player, Joe Morgan had a very successful second career as a highly respected baseball broadcaster. He was a prominent analyst for ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball for many years, alongside Jon Miller, and also worked for NBC. Joe Morgan was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1990 on his first ballot, solidifying his status as one of baseball’s all-time greats. The Cincinnati Reds retired his uniform No. 8 in 1998, and a statue of him stands outside Great American Ball Park.
Joe Morgan’s official and most recognized rookie card is the 1965 Topps #16. This card is part of the iconic 1965 Topps set. It’s a multi-player rookie card, featuring Joe Morgan alongside Sonny Jackson as “Houston Rookies.”
