Frank Edwin “Tug” McGraw Jr. was a charismatic and highly effective left-handed relief pitcher whose career spanned two decades and was highlighted by two World Series championships with two different franchises. Known for his effervescent personality and his unique “ghetto screwball.
In 1973, with the Mets struggling and seemingly out of contention, McGraw popularized the rallying cry “You Gotta Believe!” His infectious optimism and strong pitching helped spark an improbable turnaround. The Mets went from last place in August to winning the National League East division title and then the NL Pennant, before eventually losing to the Oakland Athletics in a thrilling World Series. McGraw was a vital part of the pitching staff for the “Miracle Mets” that shocked the baseball world by winning the 1969 World Series, defeating the heavily favored Baltimore Orioles.
In 1975, McGraw was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies, where he continued his success and became an even bigger legend. The 1980 World Series was the crowning achievement of his career. As the Phillies’ closer, McGraw was integral to their drive to win their first-ever World Series championship.
Notably, he is the father of country music superstar Tim McGraw. McGraw is enshrined in both the New York Mets Hall of Fame and the Philadelphia Phillies Wall of Fame.
