When you look through your vintage rosters, Hairston stands out as a tactical chess piece. Managers loved his ability to switch-hit and play both the outfield corners and first base, but his true calling card was his lethal bat off the bench in late-inning jams.
Hairston enjoyed an offensive peak in 1982, playing in 101 games for Chicago. He posted a career-high 230 at-bats, clubbing 5 home runs, driving in 28, and batting a solid .252.
During the White Sox’s historic “Winning Ugly” run to the AL West title in 1983, Hairston was invaluable. He hit a clutch .294 in 68 games, regularly coming through with game-altering pinch hits down the stretch.
By the time he wrapped up his playing days in 1989, Hairston had established himself as one of the most prolific pinch-hitters in franchise history, totaling 94 career pinch-hits for the White Sox.
