An absolute titan of high school sports in Massachusetts, Rick Asadoorian is remembered in baseball circles as a classic “what if” prospect from the turn of the millennium. Drafted in the first round of the 1999 MLB Draft by the Boston Red Sox, Asadoorian possessed an elite combination of raw power, blazing speed, and a cannon for an arm that had scouts drawing lofty comparisons before he ever took a professional swing.
Coming out of Northbridge High School in Massachusetts, Asadoorian was a legendary local figure. He wasn’t just a baseball standout; he was an All-State quarterback and a dominant basketball player, earning the prestigious Boston Globe All-Scholastic Athlete of the Year honors.
The Draft Splash: The Red Sox selected him 17th overall in 1999, dreaming of a homegrown five-tool center fielder roaming Fenway Park. He signed for a hefty $1.775 million bonus, bypassing a commitment to the University of Florida.
The Tools: Scouts raved about his 95 mph outfield arm and plus-plus speed, expecting his hit tool to catch up as he matured against professional pitching.
Despite the immense physical talent, Asadoorian struggled to adjust to the breaking balls and command of professional pitching. He became a traveling journeyman across multiple organizations, eventually attempting a late-career conversion to the mound.
