Shigetoshi Hasegawa was a successful and durable right-handed pitcher who transitioned from being a starting pitcher in Japan to becoming an effective and reliable relief pitcher in Major League Baseball (MLB) for nine seasons.
He was drafted in the first round by the Orix BlueWave in 1990 and was a teammate of Ichiro Suzuki in Japan. He won the Pacific League Rookie of the Year Award in 1991.
He was named to the American League All-Star team in 2003 as a middle reliever. In 2003 he arguably had his best MLB season, where he compiled a 1.48 ERA in 63 relief appearances (73.0 innings pitched).
Hasegawa was known for releasing the ball very quickly, which was effective in throwing off a batter’s timing. He announced his retirement in 2006.
