Luis Aparicio, nicknamed “Little Louie,” was a Venezuelan professional baseball player who had a distinguished 18-season career in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a shortstop from 1956 to 1973.
He primarily played for the Chicago White Sox (1956–1962, 1968–1970), the Baltimore Orioles (1963–1967), and the Boston Red Sox (1971–1973). The White Sox retired his number 11.
Aparicio won AL Rookie of the Year in1956. He was the first player born in Latin America to win this award. He won nine Gold Glove Awards (1958–1962, 1964, 1966, 1968, 1970). He was named an All-Star 13 times. Aparicio won a World Series championship with the Baltimore Orioles in 1966. He also helped the Chicago White Sox win the American League pennant in 1959.
Aparicio was inducted to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1984, becoming the first Venezuelan-born player to achieve the honor.
