Walter Emmons “Walt” Alston (1911–1984) is a legendary figure in baseball, renowned not for his brief playing career, but for his extraordinarily long and successful 23-season tenure as manager of the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers. He was known for his calm, stoic demeanor, earning him the nickname “The Quiet Man” in contrast to the boisterous New York baseball environment.
Alston holds a unique place in history as a Hall of Fame manager whose entire Major League playing career consisted of a single game. September 27, 1936 for the St. Louis Cardinals.
In 1954, Alston was hired to manage the Brooklyn Dodgers, beginning a run of quiet dominance that spanned one of the most transformative eras in baseball history. He managed the team from Brooklyn to Los Angeles, famously signing a series of 23 one-year contracts.
