George Thomas “Tom” Seaver, universally known as “Tom Terrific” and “The Franchise,” was one of the most dominant and iconic pitchers in Major League Baseball history. His 20-year career (1967-1986) was primarily defined by his extraordinary tenure with the New York Mets.
After a contract dispute left him briefly ineligible for the draft, a special lottery was held among three teams, with the New York Mets ultimately winning the rights to sign him in 1966. Seaver made an immediate impact, earning the nickname “Tom Terrific” in his rookie season. He won the National League Rookie of the Year Award in 1967, going 16-13 for a last-place Mets team. Seaver was the undisputed ace and catalyst for the “Miracle Mets” of 1969. He won his first Cy Young Award that year, going 25-7 with a 2.21 ERA, leading the Mets to an improbable World Series championship over the heavily favored Baltimore Orioles. Seaver went on to win two more Cy Young Awards (1973 and 1975), cementing his status as the NL’s premier pitcher.
In a shocking move that devastated Mets fans, Seaver was traded to the Cincinnati Reds in June 1977, a move forever remembered as the “Midnight Massacre.” He returned to the Mets for a single season in 1983, a sentimental comeback that was short-lived due to injuries and a subsequent trade. While with the Reds, Seaver pitched the only no-hitter of his professional career on June 16, 1978.
Seaver joined the exclusive 300-win club on August 4, 1985, as a member of the Chicago White Sox, defeating the New York Yankees with a complete game. Seaver finished his career with a brief stint with the Boston Red Sox in 1986, helping them reach the American League pennant.
After retiring, Tom Seaver became a highly respected broadcaster for the New York Yankees and later for the Mets. He also ventured into winemaking in California. Tom Seaver was overwhelmingly elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1992 on his first ballot, receiving a then-record 98.84% of the votes.
Tom Seaver’s most iconic and valuable rookie card is this 1967 Topps #581. It’s a multi-player “Rookie Stars” card, featuring Seaver alongside Bill Denehy. As a card from the “high-number” series of the 1967 set, it is significantly rarer and more valuable than lower-numbered cards.
