William “Bill” Henry Landis is a former American professional baseball pitcher who had a brief but interesting career in Major League Baseball (MLB) in the 1960s. A left-hander, he played for the Kansas City Athletics and the Boston Red Sox.
Landis made his MLB debut at the age of 20 in 1963, for the Kansas City Athletics. He appeared in just one game that season, a late-season relief assignment where he pitched 1 2/3 innings without allowing a hit or run, striking out three. However, he wouldn’t return to the major leagues for over three years.
The Boston Red Sox selected Bill Landis in the 1966 Rule 5 Draft, which proved to be a significant turning point in his career. He joined the Red Sox for the 1967 season, a memorable year for the franchise known as the “Impossible Dream” team that unexpectedly won the American League pennant.
Landis enjoyed his best season in the majors in 1968. Primarily working out of the bullpen (37 of his 38 appearances were in relief), he compiled a strong 3.15 ERA and recorded a career-high three saves. After the 1969 season, the Red Sox sent Landis to Triple-A Louisville in 1970. He briefly pitched for the St. Louis Cardinals’ Triple-A affiliate in 1971 before leaving professional baseball.
While Bill Landis’s MLB career was relatively short and didn’t feature extended periods of dominance, his peak season in 1968 showed his potential as a reliable reliever, and he was a part of one of baseball’s most iconic teams in 1967.
