Raul Mondesi is a former professional baseball player from the Dominican Republic who played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for 13 seasons, primarily as an outfielder. Known for his blend of power and speed, he was a key player for the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 1990s.
Mondesi was signed by the Los Angeles Dodgers as a free agent in 1988. He made his MLB debut with the Dodgers in 1993 and had a breakout year in 1994, winning the National League Rookie of the Year award. He twice achieved the “30-30 club,” hitting 30 or more home runs and stealing 30 or more bases in a single season. This feat, which he accomplished in 1997 and 1999, cemented his reputation as a dynamic offensive force. In addition to his Rookie of the Year award, Mondesi was selected as an All-Star in 1995 and won two Gold Glove Awards (1995 and 1997) for his stellar defensive play in right field.
While he is most remembered for his time with the Dodgers (1993-1999), he also played for the Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees, Arizona Diamondbacks, Pittsburgh Pirates, Anaheim Angels, and Atlanta Braves before his retirement in 2005.
After his baseball career, Mondesi transitioned into politics in the Dominican Republic. He was elected to the Dominican Chamber of Deputies in 2006 and later served as the mayor of his hometown of San Cristóbal from 2010 to 2016.
