Christopher “Trot” Nixon is a former professional baseball outfielder who played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for 12 seasons. He is best known for his time with the Boston Red Sox, where he was a fan favorite due to his hustle and intense style of play, earning him the nickname “Dirt Dog.”
Nixon was drafted by the Red Sox in the first round (seventh overall) of the 1993 MLB Draft. He spent the majority of his career as the team’s starting right fielder. After the Red Sox did not offer him salary arbitration, he signed with the Indians in 2007 and in 2008 he played briefly with the Mets before his retirement.
Nixon was a key member of the 2004 Red Sox team that won the World Series, their first championship in 86 years. Over his career, Nixon had a .274 batting average with 137 home runs and 555 RBIs. His best season was in 2003 when he batted .306 with 28 home runs and 87 RBIs. He was inducted into the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame.
Before his professional baseball career, Nixon was a two-sport standout in high school in North Carolina, excelling in both baseball and football. He gave up a scholarship offer to play quarterback at North Carolina State to pursue baseball after being drafted.
