Warren Edward Spahn was one of the most dominant and durable left-handed pitchers in baseball history. His career spanned 21 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB), primarily with the Boston/Milwaukee Braves. Spahn debuted with the Boston Braves in 1942 but his career was quickly interrupted by service in the United States Army during World War II (1943-1945). He served with distinction, seeing action in the Battle of the Bulge and at the Ludendorff Bridge, and was awarded a Purple Heart.
In 1957, at age 36, Spahn won the prestigious Cy Young Award (then given to the best pitcher in both leagues). Spahn helped lead the Milwaukee Braves to a World Series championship over the New York Yankees and was an astounding 17-time All-Star. Warren Spahn was the ace of the 1957 Milwaukee Braves team that won the World Series, bringing the championship to Milwaukee. He continued to pitch effectively well into his 40s, including a 23-7 record at age 42 in 1963. He finally retired in 1965 after short stints with the New York Mets and San Francisco Giants.
Warren Spahn was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1973 in his first year of eligibility, receiving over 82% of the vote. His uniform number 21 was retired by the Atlanta Braves. The Warren Spahn Award, given annually to the best left-handed pitcher in MLB, is named in his honor.
