Philip Francis “Phil” Rizzuto, affectionately known as “The Scooter,” was a legendary figure in baseball, renowned for his exceptional play at shortstop for the New York Yankees during their dynasty years and later for a beloved career as a broadcaster. Phil Rizzuto spent his entire 13-year Major League Baseball playing career (1941-1942, 1946-1956) with the New York Yankees. Rizzuto was celebrated as one of the finest defensive shortstops of his era. Despite his relatively small stature (5’6″), he possessed incredible range, quick hands, and a strong, accurate arm.
Rizzuto was finally elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1994 by the Veterans Committee, after many years of passionate advocacy from fans and fellow players. His uniform number 10 was retired by the New York Yankees in 1985.
While Rizzuto’s value was usually measured in defensive runs saved and base-running pressure, his 1950 season was so spectacularly complete that he beat out teammate Joe DiMaggio and Red Sox rival Billy Goodman to capture the AL MVP Award.
The Statline: Rizzuto batted a brilliant .324 with 200 hits, 36 doubles, and 125 runs scored.
The Discipline: He walked 92 times against just 39 strikeouts, posting an outstanding .418 on-base percentage at the top of the Yankees’ lineup.
The Sacrifices: Renowned as the greatest bunter of his era, Rizzuto laid down a league-leading 19 sacrifice bunts in 1950, moving runners with absolute, mechanical precision to fuel the Yankees’ run to another World Championship.

Did You Know? After his retirement in 1956, Rizzuto transitioned directly to the broadcast booth, where he spent the next 40 years as the beloved, highly eccentric voice of the New York Yankees.
Known for his warm, stream-of-consciousness style, Rizzuto popularized the catchphrase “Holy Cow!” and was famous for shouting out birthdays, discussing his favorite Italian restaurants, expressing his terror of lightning and bugs, and leaving games early to beat the George Washington Bridge traffic. His broadcasting career made him an iconic figure to millions of fans who never even saw him play.
