Frank Robinson was an influential figure in baseball, with a long and distinguished career as both a player and a manager. He is recognized for his powerful hitting, competitive intensity, and for helping break the color barrier as Major League Baseball’s first Black manager.

Robinson’s playing career spanned 21 seasons from 1956 to 1976. He played for five different teams, but is most remembered for his time with the Cincinnati Reds (1956–1965) and the Baltimore Orioles (1966–1971).

Frank Robinson won the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award in both the National League (1961 with the Reds) and the American League (1966 with the Orioles). In 1966, he also won the Triple Crown, leading the AL in batting average (.316), home runs (49), and RBIs (122), and was named the World Series MVP as the Orioles won the championship. His career accolades also include the 1956 NL Rookie of the Year, a Gold Glove Award, and 14 All-Star selections.

He was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1982 in his first year of eligibility. His uniform number 20 was retired by three teams: the Orioles, Reds, and Cleveland Indians.

In 1975, while still an active player with the Cleveland Indians, Robinson was named the team’s player-manager, making him the first Black manager in the history of Major League Baseball. He managed for 16 seasons with four different teams: the Indians, San Francisco Giants, Baltimore Orioles, and Montreal Expos/Washington Nationals. Though his managerial record was a losing one, he won the American League Manager of the Year Award in 1989 for leading a significant turnaround with the Orioles.

Beyond the field, Robinson served in various leadership capacities with MLB’s central office. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2005.
