Anthony Christopher “Tony” Kubek is a former professional baseball player and television broadcaster.
Kubek played his entire nine-year career (1957–1965) with the New York Yankees. A versatile infielder and outfielder, he was a key part of the Yankees’ success in the late 1950s and early 1960s. He won the American League Rookie of the Year award in 1957. Kubek played in six World Series and won three World Series championships (1958, 1961, and 1962). He was a four-time All-Star.
His playing career was cut short due to a back injury.
After his retirement as a player, Kubek became a well-known baseball broadcaster. He spent 24 years with NBC, working on the network’s “Game of the Week” telecasts, often paired with announcers like Joe Garagiola and Bob Costas. He broadcast eleven World Series, fourteen League Championship Series, and ten All-Star Games for NBC. He also served as a local broadcaster for the Toronto Blue Jays (1977–1989) and the New York Yankees (1990–1994).
He was honored with the Ford C. Frick Award in 2009, which is presented by the Baseball Hall of Fame to broadcasters for their contributions to baseball. He was the first recipient whose broadcast career was exclusively in television. He was inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 2016.
