Orlando Hernández, famously nicknamed “El Duque” (The Duke), is a Cuban-born former professional baseball pitcher known for his distinctive pitching style and exceptional success in the postseason.
Before his MLB debut, Hernández was a star pitcher for the Industriales of the Cuban National Series and the Cuban national baseball team. He was a member of the gold medal-winning Cuban team at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. He was the first player to win both an Olympic gold medal and the World Series.
In 1997, after being banned from Cuban baseball for allegedly planning to defect (following his half-brother Liván Hernández), Orlando fled Cuba by boat and eventually signed with the New York Yankees in 1998.
He played for four MLB franchises:
- New York Yankees (1998–2002, 2004)
- Chicago White Sox (2005)
- Arizona Diamondbacks (2006)
- New York Mets (2006–2007)
He was universally known as “El Duque,” a nickname he inherited from his father. His pitching delivery was instantly recognizable, featuring an extremely high leg kick that brought his knee up near his left shoulder, which helped keep hitters off balance.
Hernandez is a four-time World Series champion: New York Yankees (1998, 1999, 2000) and Chicago White Sox (2005). He was named the American League Championship Series MVP in 1999 with the Yankees.
