Roy Halladay (Harry Leroy Halladay III, May 14, 1977 – November 7, 2017) was an American professional baseball pitcher who played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Toronto Blue Jays (1998–2009) and the Philadelphia Phillies (2010–2013).
He was known by the nickname “Doc,” which was coined by Blue Jays announcer Tom Cheek, a reference to the gunslinger Doc Holliday. Halladay was one of the most dominant pitchers of his era and is regarded as one of the greatest of all time.
Halladay is one of only a few pitchers to win the Cy Young Award in both the American League and the National League. He won the American League Cy Young Award in 2003 with the Toronto Blue Jays (22-7 record). The National League Cy Young Award in 2010 with the Philadelphia Phillies (21-10 record).
In his first season with the Phillies in 2010, Halladay accomplished two rare feats: Pitched the 20th perfect game in MLB history on May 29 against the Florida Marlins. Threw a no-hitter in Game 1 of the NL Division Series against the Cincinnati Reds on October 6, becoming just the second pitcher (and the first in the NL) to throw a no-hitter in the postseason. He was selected as an 8-time All-Star (6 times in the AL, 2 times in the NL).
He was posthumously inducted to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2019 in his first year of eligibility.
Halladay retired after the 2013 season, signing a one-day contract to officially retire as a Toronto Blue Jay. Both the Blue Jays (No. 32) and the Phillies (No. 34) have retired his jersey number.
Halladay tragically died on November 7, 2017, at age 40 when the private plane he was operating crashed into the Gulf of Mexico.
