José Manuel Guillén is a former professional baseball player from the Dominican Republic who played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for 14 seasons (1997–2010), primarily as an outfielder.
He played for 10 different teams, including the Pittsburgh Pirates, Tampa Bay Devil Rays, Arizona Diamondbacks, Cincinnati Reds, Oakland Athletics, Anaheim Angels, Washington Nationals, Seattle Mariners, Kansas City Royals, and San Francisco Giants.
He was known for his exceptionally strong throwing arm, which was showcased in a memorable play on July 27, 1998, when, as a Pirate, he made what is widely described as one of the most spectacular outfield assists in history, throwing out Neifi Pérez at third base from the warning track after misjudging a ball. This throw is sometimes referred to as the “mutant throw.”
Guillén had a reputation for a fiery and sometimes controversial personality, leading to several on-field altercations and multiple suspensions during his career. He was suspended for the remainder of the 2004 season and playoffs by the Anaheim Angels for “inappropriate conduct” after throwing his helmet and glove in the dugout following his removal for a pinch-runner. He was also linked to performance-enhancing drug allegations, including being named in the 2007 Mitchell Report, though he denied the allegations.
