David Ortiz, nicknamed “Big Papi,” is one of the most dominant and clutch designated hitters in Major League Baseball history, most notably for his time with the Boston Red Sox.
Ortiz began his MLB career with the Minnesota Twins after being traded from the Seattle Mariners organization. His tenure in Minnesota was marked by inconsistency and injuries, and he was released after the 2002 season.
Signing with the Red Sox was the turning point in his career and for the franchise. He quickly became a cornerstone of the team and one of the most feared left-handed sluggers in the game. His arrival coincided with a golden era for the Red Sox, which had previously endured an 86-year World Series drought. He is widely considered the greatest designated hitter (DH) of all time.
Some of his awards and honors include being a 3x World Series Champion: (2004, 2007, 2013), 10x All-Star, 7x Silver Slugger Award winner and 2013 World Series MVP.
Ortiz defied his age, putting together one of the greatest final seasons in baseball history at the age of 40. He hit .315 with 38 home runs and led the American League in doubles (48), RBIs (127), slugging percentage (.620), and OPS (1.021). He was voted an All-Star and finished 6th in the AL MVP voting.
Ortiz was inducted to the National Base all Hall of Fame on the first ballot in 2022.
