Bret Saberhagen was a dominant Major League Baseball pitcher known for his exceptional command and “big-game” performances. He is most famously associated with the Kansas City Royals, where he spent the first eight years of his career.
Saberhagen was a two-time winner of the American League Cy Young Award, which honors the league’s best pitcher. He won the award in 1985 with a record of 20–6 and a 2.87 ERA, and again in 1989 with a 23–6 record and a career-best 2.16 ERA. At just 21 years old, he was a key factor in the Royals’ 1985 World Series championship. He was named the World Series MVP after going 2-0 with a 0.50 ERA, including a memorable Game 7 shutout. On August 26, 1991, he threw a no-hitter against the Chicago White Sox.
Saberhagen was known for a peculiar pattern of having a stellar “odd-numbered” year and a less-successful “even-numbered” year for much of his career. This pattern was most pronounced in his early years with the Royals. While most famous for his time with the Kansas City Royals (1984-1991), he also played for the New York Mets (1992-1995), the Colorado Rockies (1995), and the Boston Red Sox (1997-1999, 2001).
He finished his career with a 167–117 win-loss record, a 3.34 ERA, and 1,715 strikeouts. He was inducted into the Kansas City Royals Hall of Fame in 2005.
