Overview of 2002 Topps Baseball Cards

The 2002 Topps Baseball card set is a significant release from the early 2000s, notable for its large checklist, key rookie cards, and a unique tribute to one of baseball’s biggest single-season achievements.

Set Structure: The complete base set consists of 718 cards, issued in two separate series (Series 1: 364 cards, Series 2: 354 cards).

Card #7: Consistent with the tradition, card #7 was retired in honor of Mickey Mantle.

Design: The card fronts feature an orange border with a colored ribbon and team logo in the top left. The player’s name is in gold foil in a ribbon at the bottom. The backs are horizontal and include a small player photo, biographical information, and stats.

Subsets: The set includes various themed subsets including Prospects/Draft Picks (including Joe Mauer’s Draft Pick card), League Leaders and September 11 Tribute (cards #357-364).

(Rookiecardprices.com only shows values for regular base set cards. No prices are shown for errors, parallels, subsets, misprints or other cards unless noted.)

Key Rookie Cards (Rookies): The 2002 Topps set features one of the most important rookie cards of the era, along with several other notable RCs.

Joe Mauer (Card #622) – This is considered his most significant rookie card and is highly sought after.

Jason Bay (Card #326)

Rich Harden (Card #687)

The Barry Bonds Home Run Tribute: One of the most defining and unique aspects of the 2002 Topps set is the tribute to Barry Bonds’ record-setting 73-home run season in 2001.

Card #365: This card features 73 different variations, one for each home run Bonds hit during his 2001 campaign. Each variant is considered individually short-printed compared to other cards in the set. Collecting all 73 variations is a significant challenge for set builders.

The 2002 Topps set is fondly remembered by collectors for balancing a traditional flagship design with the modern chase elements of rookie cards, autographs, and game-used relics that had become popular in the hobby.
