Roy Oswalt was one of the premier starting pitchers in the National League during the 2000s, known for his consistency, high velocity, and being an absolute workhorse for the Houston Astros.
Roy Edward Oswalt played 13 seasons in the MLB (2001–2013), with the majority and best years of his career spent as the ace of the Houston Astros staff. He played for the following teams Houston Astros (2001–2010), Philadelphia Phillies (2010–2011), Texas Rangers (2012) and Colorado Rockies (2013).
Oswalt was consistently in the conversation for the National League’s top pitchers for nearly a decade.
- NLCS MVP (2005): He was dominant in the 2005 National League Championship Series against the St. Louis Cardinals, leading the Astros to their first-ever World Series appearance.
- 3× MLB All-Star (2005, 2006, 2007)
- 2× 20-Game Winner: (2004, 2005) He was the only NL pitcher to win 20 games in 2004.
- NL ERA Leader (2006)
- Houston Astros Hall of Fame: Inducted in 2019.
- Olympic Gold Medalist (2000): Won gold with Team USA at the Sydney Olympics before his MLB debut.
Oswalt primarily relied on a high-velocity four-seam fastball (sitting 91–94 mph) and an exceptional curveball, which helped him limit walks and generate ground balls.
When he was traded in 2010, his 143 wins and 1,593 strikeouts were both second in Astros franchise history, only trailing Joe Niekro and Nolan Ryan, respectively.
