Overview of 1993 Ultra Baseball Cards
The 1993 Fleer Ultra baseball set is widely considered one of the high quality sets for the “premium” card movement of the early 90s. Building on the success of the 1992 redesign, Fleer focused on high-gloss finishes, gold foil accents, and high-quality photography that set it apart from the standard cardboard of the era.
Set Overview & Design: The set consists of 650 cards released in two series (Series 1: 1-300; Series 2: 301-650). Series 2 was notable for including 51 cards dedicated to the two new expansion teams, the Florida Marlins and Colorado Rockies. The cards featured a UV-coating on both sides, making them extremely “sticky” over time (collectors often refer to this as “bricking”). These cards have a sleek, full-bleed photo design with the “Ultra” logo and player name in gold foil.
Key Rookie Cards (RCs): While 1993 is most famous for the SP Derek Jeter rookie, Fleer Ultra contains several Hall of Fame and star-caliber rookies.
- Mike Piazza (#60): His most iconic Fleer Ultra card, though technically he has cards in earlier 1992 sets, this is a staple of the ’93 set.
- Pedro Martinez (#57): A key rookie card for the legendary pitcher.
- Jim Edmonds (#519): A highly sought-after rookie due to his later success with the Cardinals.
- Trevor Hoffman (#378): The Hall of Fame closer’s rookie card.
- Manny Ramirez (#545): Another major offensive star of the era.
Popular Insert Sets: Fleer Ultra was a leader in the “insert craze.” These cards were much harder to find than base cards and featured even more aggressive designs.
- All-Stars: 20-card set found in Series 2 (1:9 packs).
- Home Run Kings: 10-card set featuring stars like Barry Bonds and Mark McGwire (1:18 packs).
- Strikeout Kings: A 5-card set featuring Nolan Ryan and Randy Johnson—this is one of the most aesthetically pleasing inserts of the set (1:37 packs).
- Dennis Eckersley Career Highlights: A special tribute to the closer, including a very rare autograph version (limited to 2,000) which remains one of the most valuable cards in the entire product.
- Ultra Performers: A 10-card set that was actually serial-numbered (to 150,000), which was a novelty at the time.
(Rookiecardprices.com only shows values for regular base set cards. No prices are shown for errors, parallels, subsets, misprints or other cards unless noted.)
Market Value & Tips: Because 1993 was the peak of the “Junk Wax” era, production numbers were still very high.
Due to the high-gloss coating, these cards are prone to “chipping” on the edges and “bricking” (sticking together in unopened packs).
The “Bricking” Risk: If you buy a sealed box today, be careful. The cards often fuse together, and prying them apart can ruin the surface of the cards.
