John Olerud is a former professional baseball player known for his sweet, left-handed swing, exceptional discipline at the plate, and a distinctive habit of wearing his batting helmet in the field. He had a 17-season career in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a first baseman, playing for five different teams.
His promising career was nearly derailed by a subarachnoid hemorrhage (a type of brain seizure) he suffered in 1989. After recovering from surgery, he chose to sign with the Toronto Blue Jays, who promised he would report directly to the majors without playing in the minors. The brain aneurysm is the reason he wore a batting helmet in the field throughout his career as a precautionary measure.
Olerud was a key member of the Blue Jays’ World Series championship teams in 1992 and 1993. His breakout season came in 1993, when he won the American League batting title with a .363 average and flirted with hitting .400 for much of the season.
Olerud continued to be a productive hitter for the New York Mets. He was part of what was famously dubbed “the best infield in baseball history” by Sports Illustrated, alongside Edgardo Alfonzo, Rey Ordóñez, and Robin Ventura.
Olerud returned to his home state of Washington and played a crucial role for the Mariners. He won three Gold Glove Awards for his stellar defense at first base during his time in Seattle.
After retiring from baseball in 2005, Olerud was inducted into the National College Baseball Hall of Fame in 2007. The College Baseball Foundation created the John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award in his honor, given annually to the best dual hitter/pitcher at the collegiate level.
