Magadan debuted with the New York Mets in late 1986. While he arrived too late to be on the postseason roster for their World Series title, he made an immediate splash, hitting .444 in a 10-game cup of coffee.
Magadan was a “Moneyball” player before the term existed. He walked 718 times against only 546 strikeouts. His .390 career OBP is elite—ranking him in the top 100 all-time, ahead of many Hall of Famers.
His best season came in 1990 with the Mets, where he hit .328 (3rd in the NL) and posted a .417 OBP (2nd in the NL), even earning a few MVP votes. After seven seasons in New York, he became a valuable veteran presence for the Marlins, Mariners, Astros, Cubs, Athletics, and Padres.
After retiring in 2001, Magadan transitioned into a highly respected hitting coach. He spent two decades in MLB dugouts for teams including: San Diego Padres (2003–2006), Boston Red Sox (2007–2012) – He was the hitting coach for the 2007 World Series championship team. He also coached the Texas Rangers, Arizona Diamondbacks, and Colorado Rockies.
