Manufacturer: Topps
Set Size: Base Set: 792 Cards | Traded Set: 100 Cards
Card Size: 2-1/2” x 3-1/2”
Set Notes: 1987 Topps baseball cards feature woodgrain pattern boarders similar to the 1962 Topps set. The fronts contain a color image of the player, team logo and players name in a team color box. The backs display player stats and a variety of other data in blue and yellow ink. While 1987 has a decent rookie lineup the over printing of cards from this time period make raw cards, even for the top rookies not worth much. However high graded specimens can still be valuable.

Overview of 1987 Topps Baseball Cards
The 1987 Topps baseball card set is a classic entry in the hobby, notable for its distinctive wood-grain design, extensive checklist, and a strong rookie class. It’s considered a key set from the “Junk Wax Era” of card collecting, a time of massive overproduction.
Design: The defining feature of the 1987 Topps set is its wood-grain borders, a throwback to the popular 1962 Topps design. This unique aesthetic gives the cards a warm, vintage feel that stands out from the more common white-bordered sets of the era. The player’s name is displayed in a bold, whimsical font, with the team and position below. The card backs feature a player’s statistics and a short biography or fun fact.
Checklist and Key Cards: The base set is substantial, containing 792 cards. It includes a variety of subsets like “Record Breakers,” “All-Stars,” and “Turn Back the Clock,” which features cards of past legends. While the set is known for its massive print run, several cards remain highly sought after by collectors.
Rookie Cards: The 1987 Topps set is loaded with rookie cards that would go on to be stars, including Mark McGwire, Barry Bonds, Barry Larkin, Will Clark, and Rafael Palmeiro. Other notable rookie cards include Bo Jackson, Bobby Bonilla, and Devon White.
The “Junk Wax” Legacy: The 1987 Topps set is a prime example of the overproduction that defined the late 1980s and early 1990s. Millions of cards were printed, making a vast majority of the individual cards relatively inexpensive today. This high availability, however, has also made it one of the most accessible sets for collectors, as complete sets and sealed boxes can often be found for a low price.
The Topps Traded Set: In addition to the main set, Topps also released a 1987 Topps Traded set. This set is particularly notable for featuring the “true” rookie cards of players who debuted during the season, such as Greg Maddux. These cards are often printed on a higher quality cardstock than the regular issue cards.
