Selected in the 1st round (2nd overall pick) of the 1983 MLB Secondary Draft out of the University of Florida by the San Francisco Giants, Robert Joseph “Robby” Thompson was the fiery, smooth-fielding anchor at second base for San Francisco throughout the late 1980s and 1990s.

Bypassing Triple-A to claim the Giants’ starting second base job in 1986, Thompson spent his entire 11-season Major League career (1986–1996) in San Francisco. Known for his stellar defense, clutch hitting, and fearless style of play, Thompson earned two All-Star selections, a Gold Glove Award, and a Silver Slugger Award while serving as a team leader alongside Will Clark and Kevin Mitchell.

Thompson quickly established himself as one of the National League’s premier middle infielders upon his arrival on the West Coast.

1986 Outstanding Rookie Campaign: Stepped straight into the starting lineup and played in 149 games, hitting .271 with 149 hits, 27 doubles, 7 triples, 7 home runs, and 12 stolen bases, finishing runner-up to Todd Worrell for NL Rookie of the Year and earning a spot on the Topps All-Star Rookie Team.

1989 NL Pennant Run: Served as the lead-off catalyst for the 1989 NL Champion San Francisco Giants, batting .241 with 13 home runs, 27 doubles, and 12 stolen bases, while delivering crucial postseason hits during the NLCS against Chicago.

1993 Career Peak Season: Turned in an elite campaign in 1993, hitting .312 with 19 home runs, 30 doubles, and 65 RBIs in 131 games, earning his second NL All-Star selection, a Rawlings Gold Glove Award, and an NL Silver Slugger Award.

Did You Know?   (May 22, 1992) Robby Thompson became the first player in Major League Baseball history to be caught stealing four times in a single game—a testament to his aggressive baserunning and manager Roger Craig’s green light.
