Worrell made a brief but historic debut late in 1985, instantly stepping onto the game’s biggest stage. During the 1985 World Series against the Kansas City Royals, he tied a Fall Classic record by striking out six consecutive batters in relief.
His true masterpiece came the following year:
- 1986 NL Rookie of the Year: He officially retained his rookie status for 1986 and completely dominated, leading the National League with 36 saves while posting a stellar 2.08 ERA over 103.2 innings pitched.
- Hardware: Alongside his ROY honors, he claimed the 1986 NL Rolaids Relief Man Award.
- The Save Leader Bookends: Worrell had incredible longevity, leading the National League in saves exactly ten years apart—first with the Cardinals in 1986 (36) and later with the Dodgers in 1996 (44 saves, a career-high)

Did You Know? On June 13, 1997, Todd and his younger brother, Tim Worrell (who also carved out a lengthy MLB career as a reliever), both recorded a save on the exact same day for different teams—becoming only the second pair of brothers in major league history to accomplish the feat.
