Manufacturer: Donruss
Set Size: Base Set: 660 Cards | Rookies Set: 56 Cards
Card Size: 2-1/2” x 3-1/2”
Set Notes: The 1986 Donruss baseball card set is thought by many in the hobby to be the introductory set to the “junk wax” era. Most notably the Jose Canseco Rated Rookie card was at the time a must have. This set was printed in mass and today plenty of the Canseco rookies can be found at low prices compared to back then. This set features color photos of the player on front with a blue and black stripe design along the border. Backs continue the simple Donruss look with stats, player name and card number on a blue background. The Rookies subset matches this design only in a green opposed to blue.
Key Rookies From 1986 Donruss: 28– Fred McGriff | 39 – Jose Canseco | 512 – Cecil Fielder | 38 – Bo Jackson (The Rookies)

Overview of 1986 Donruss Baseball Cards
The 1986 Donruss baseball card set is a classic example of the “junk wax” era of sports card collecting, but it remains a significant and popular set due to its strong rookie card class and unique design.
Design and Features: The card fronts feature a blue border with black pinstripes and a player photo. The design includes the team logo and the Donruss logo, with the player’s name and position in white text on a red background. Like other Donruss sets of the era, it included “Diamond Kings” cards, which featured artist renderings of top players, and “Rated Rookies” cards, which showcased some of the most promising young talent. The set also included puzzle pieces of Hank Aaron, which were inserted into each wax pack.
Notable Rookies: While the overall value of many cards from this era has declined due to overproduction, the 1986 Donruss set is highly sought after for a few key rookie cards. The most valuable and iconic card from the set is the Jose Canseco “Rated Rookie” card. Canseco was an incredibly popular player at the time, and this card is considered his only solo rookie card in a major set that year.
Other notable rookie cards in the set include:
- Fred McGriff: A future Hall of Famer, his card is also a key part of the set.
- Bo Jackson: While his famous rookie card is in the 1987 Donruss set, this card is found in the special “The Rookies” set, which was a separate product from the main 1986 Donruss release.
- Barry Bonds: Bonds’ rookie card is also featured in the 1986 Donruss “The Rookies” set, making it a valuable and important card for collectors.
- Will Clark: His card in “The Rookies” set is another popular and valuable card from that year.
The 1986 Donruss set is a great piece of baseball history, capturing the look and feel of baseball in the mid-1980s.
