Daulton didn’t start as a star. Drafted by the Phillies in 1980, he spent years as a backup or a platooned catcher. It took him nearly a decade to truly establish himself as a full-time starter. He suffered through a staggering nine knee surgeries over his career. Most players would have retired; Dutch just put on more ice.
In the early 90s, Daulton transformed into one of the best hitting catchers in the National League. He was the undisputed captain of the 1993 Phillies—a team famous for being “dirty, hairy, and loud.”
In 1992 he led the NL with 109 RBIs, won a Silver Slugger, and finished 4th in MVP voting. This was almost unheard of for a catcher in that era. He was the heartbeat of the 1993 team that went from last place to the World Series. Even with his knees failing, he put up a .400 On-Base Percentage that year. By 1997, Daulton’s knees were shot to the point where he could no longer catch. The Phillies traded their icon to the Florida Marlins so he could have one last shot at a ring as a first baseman/pinch hitter. He was the “missing piece” for Florida. He hit .389 in the 1997 World Series, finally getting his championship ring before retiring immediately after the season. He went out at the absolute top.
Sadly, he was diagnosed with glioblastoma (brain cancer) in 2013 and passed away in 2017.
