Greg Maddux, nicknamed “Mad Dog” and “the Professor,” was a dominant right-handed pitcher who had a 23-season career in Major League Baseball (MLB). He is widely considered one of the greatest pitchers in baseball history.
Maddux played for four different teams: the Chicago Cubs (1986–1992, 2004–2006), Atlanta Braves (1993–2003), Los Angeles Dodgers (2006, 2008), and San Diego Padres (2007–2008).
Maddux won the National League Cy Young Award for four straight years, from 1992 to 1995, becoming the first pitcher to achieve this feat. He won a record 18 Gold Glove Awards for his superior defensive skills as a pitcher. He was a key member of the Atlanta Braves’ rotation that won the World Series in 1995.
Maddux was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2014, receiving 97.2% of the vote on his first ballot.
Maddux’s pitching style relied on precision and deception. He was known for his ability to locate his pitches, particularly his two-seam fastball, which had late movement. He studied hitters meticulously and often outsmarted them by anticipating their actions. Both the Chicago Cubs and the Atlanta Braves have retired his number 31.
