David Cone was a Major League Baseball pitcher who played from 1986 to 2003. He was drafted by the Kansas City Royals in 1981 and played for five different teams throughout his career: the Kansas City Royals, New York Mets, Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees, and Boston Red Sox.

Cone was known for his durability and success as a starting pitcher. He was a five-time All-Star and won the American League Cy Young Award in 1994. He was also a five-time World Series champion, winning with the Toronto Blue Jays in 1992 and with the New York Yankees in 1996, 1998, 1999, and 2000.

One of the most notable moments of his career came on July 18, 1999, when he pitched the 16th perfect game in MLB history while playing for the New York Yankees. The perfect game was a highlight of a career that also saw him lead the major leagues in strikeouts for three consecutive seasons from 1990 to 1992.

Following his playing career, Cone transitioned into a broadcasting role. He has served as a color commentator for the New York Yankees on the YES Network and for ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball telecasts. He has also co-hosted a pitching podcast.

Did You Know?  After a brief stint with the Toronto Blue Jays where he helped secure the 1992 World Series title, Cone returned to Kansas City and put together an absolute clinic during the strike-shortened 1994 season.

Serving as the definitive anchor of the Royals’ pitching staff, Cone was practically unhittable over 23 starts. He engineered a spectacular 16-5 record with a 2.94 ERA, tossing three complete games and a shutout while striking out 132 batters in 171.2 innings of work. His precision and veteran savvy allowed him to outclass a highly competitive field of American League pitchers, earning him the prestigious 1994 AL Cy Young Award and proving his elite arsenal could dominate any lineup in baseball.
