Selected in the 6th round of the 1981 MLB Draft out of Edison High School in Manhattan by the California Angels, Devon Markes White (nicknamed “Devo”) was one of the premier defensive center fielders and speed merchants of the 1990s.
Combining game-changing range, a lethal throwing arm, and base-stealing speed, White anchored center field across a 17-season Major League career (1985–2001) with the Angels, Blue Jays, Marlins, Diamondbacks, Dodgers, and Brewers. He was a crucial core contributor to three World Series Championship teams (1992, 1993, 1997) and earned seven Rawlings Gold Glove Awards.
White was widely regarded alongside Ken Griffey Jr. as the standard-bearer for center field defense during his peak.
1987 Rookie Impression: Stepped into Anaheim’s starting lineup as a full-time rookie, batting .263 with 24 home runs, 33 doubles, 87 RBIs, and 32 stolen bases, earning a spot on the Topps All-Star Rookie Team and finishing 5th in AL Rookie of the Year voting.
7-Time Gold Glove Winner: Captured seven Rawlings Gold Glove Awards (1988–1989, 1991–1995), displaying unmatched range and making acrobatic catches at the wall.
3-Time World Champion: Served as the lead-off catalyst and defensive anchor for back-to-back World Champion Toronto Blue Jays teams (1992, 1993) and the 1997 World Champion Florida Marlins.
