Selected in the 4th round of the 1985 MLB Draft out of Mississippi State University by the Chicago White Sox, Robert Thomas “Bobby” Thigpen was one of the premier late-inning relief aces of the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Armed with a mid-90s sinking fastball and a sharp slider, Thigpen shattered Major League Baseball’s single-season save record in 1990, establishing a gold standard for relief dominance that stood for 18 years. Over a nine-season MLB career (1986–1994) primarily with the White Sox, along with stints with the Phillies and Mariners, Thigpen racked up 201 career saves.
Thigpen’s 1990 campaign remains one of the single most dominant seasons by a relief pitcher in baseball history.
1990 Historic Save Record: Shattered Dave Righetti’s previous single-season save record (46) by racking up 57 saves in 1990. He finished 57-for-65 in save opportunities, posted a 1.83 ERA, pitched in 77 games (88.2 IP), and held opposing batters to a .200 average.
Awards Recognition: Finished 4th in AL Cy Young Award voting and 5th in AL MVP voting in 1990 while earning his first AL All-Star selection and winning the Rolaids Relief Man Award.
