Jamie Moyer is the ultimate example of longevity and craftiness in baseball history. While he wasn’t a “power” pitcher, he managed to pitch in the Major Leagues across four different decades (1980s, 90s, 2000s, and 2010s).
Moyer’s career spanned 25 seasons, a feat of endurance rarely seen in professional sports. He debuted with the Chicago Cubs in 1986 and didn’t hang up his cleats until 2012.
Moyer was famous for a fastball that often didn’t reach 85 mph. He relied on elite control, changing speeds, and a devastating changeup to keep hitters off balance. On April 17, 2012, while pitching for the Colorado Rockies, Moyer became the oldest pitcher in MLB history to win a game at 49 years and 150 days old.
- Seattle Mariners (1996–2006): He became a franchise icon in Seattle, winning 145 games and earning an All-Star nod in 2003 at age 40. He is a member of the Mariners Hall of Fame.
- Philadelphia Phillies (2006–2010): A native of the Philadelphia area, Moyer achieved a “full-circle” moment by helping the Phillies win the 2008 World Series. At age 45, he was a key veteran in their rotation.
In 2003, Moyer received the Roberto Clemente Award for his sportsmanship and community involvement.
By the time he retired, Moyer had faced 8.9% of all hitters who had ever played in Major League Baseball up to that point. His career was so long that he once pitched against players whose fathers he had also faced earlier in his career.
