Leyland never played a single game in the Major Leagues. Instead, he spent over a decade grinding as a catcher in the minors before realizing his true calling was in the dugout. He eventually became Tony La Russa’s third-base coach with the White Sox before getting his big break.
- The Pittsburgh Pirates (1986–1996): Leyland led the “Killer B’s” (Barry Bonds and Bobby Bonilla) to three straight NLCS appearances from 1990–1992. He was famously the only man who could ever truly “manage” Barry Bonds.
- The Florida Marlins (1997): In just his first year with the team, he led a veteran “rent-a-squad” to a thrilling 7-game World Series victory over Cleveland.
- The Detroit Tigers (2006–2013): After a brief stint with the Rockies and some time scouting, Leyland returned to Detroit and immediately took a team that had lost 119 games three years prior to the World Series. He won two pennants in Detroit and solidified his Hall of Fame resume.
Leyland was brutally honest but fiercely loyal. Players loved him because he took the heat for their failures and gave them the credit for their successes. Leyland wasn’t afraid to cry after a big win or a tough loss. His raw emotion made him a favorite among fans in blue-collar cities like Pittsburgh and Detroit. Even after retiring from MLB, he managed Team USA to its first-ever World Baseball Classic gold medal, proving his tactical mind hadn’t lost a step.
