Fred McGriff, nicknamed “Crime Dog,” was a prominent first baseman who played in Major League Baseball from 1986 to 2004. Known for his consistent power hitting, he was a key player for several teams throughout his career.
McGriff hit 30 or more home runs in 10 different seasons and drove in over 80 RBIs every year from 1988 to 2002. He is one of the few players to lead both the American League and National League in home runs, doing so with 36 homers for the Toronto Blue Jays in 1989 and 35 for the San Diego Padres in 1992.
McGriff was a key member of the 1995 Atlanta Braves team that won the World Series. He was a five-time All-Star, won three Silver Slugger Awards, and was named the MVP of the 1994 All-Star Game after hitting a game-tying, pinch-hit home run in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Fred McGriff is in the National Baseball Hall of Fame. He was elected by the Contemporary Baseball Era Committee in a unanimous vote in December 2022 and was formally inducted on July 23, 2023.
