Vaughn spent the first half of his career as the primary power threat for the Milwaukee Brewers. Drafted 4th overall in 1986, he quickly became a fan favorite. By 1993, he was an All-Star, launching 30 homers and driving in 97 runs. While the Brewers weren’t always top contenders, Vaughn was a lock for 25–30 home runs every year he was healthy.

In 1996, in the middle of a massive 41-homer season, he was traded to the San Diego Padres. It was a move that eventually helped propel the Padres to a pennant. Vaughn blasted 50 home runs in 1998. In almost any other year in history, he would have been the biggest story in baseball. Even in the “Steroid Era” chaos, hitting 50 was a massive milestone.

He was the veteran leader of the Padres team that went to the World Series. In Game 1 against the legendary ’98 Yankees, Vaughn hit two home runs off Andy Pettitte, momentarily silencing Yankee Stadium.

Vaughn finished with 355 career home runs and over 1,000 RBIs. He was a 4-time All-Star and a Silver Slugger winner.

If the name sounds familiar for other reasons, it’s because baseball runs in the blood. He is the cousin of fellow 90s powerhouse Mo Vaughn (the “Hit Dog”) and former MLB player/manager Jerry Royster.
