Schilling struggled with maturity and consistency early on. He was primarily a reliever and “shuttled” between the majors and minors. He was traded twice before finding his footing—most notably from Houston to Philadelphia for Jason Grimsley, a trade now considered a massive steal for the Phillies.

In Philadelphia, Schilling became a workhorse.  He won the NLCS MVP and threw a legendary five-hit shutout in Game 5 of the 1993 World Series to keep the Phillies alive. Schilling recorded back-to-back 300-strikeout seasons (1997–1998), setting a Phillies franchise record with 319 in 1997.

In 2000 he was traded to Arizona, he teamed up with Randy Johnson to form perhaps the most feared pitching duo in history. Schilling and Johnson shared World Series MVP honors in 2001 after leading Arizona to a dramatic Game 7 upset of the New York Yankees. He finished 2nd in Cy Young voting in both 2001 and 2002 (losing both times to his teammate, Randy Johnson).

Schilling was traded to Boston specifically to help them “break the curse.” Despite a ruptured tendon in his ankle, Schilling underwent a temporary surgical procedure to “staple” the tendon in place. He pitched Game 6 of the ALCS and Game 2 of the World Series with blood visibly soaking through his sock, leading Boston to its first title in 86 years. He helped the Red Sox win another title in 2007 before retiring.

Schilling is widely considered a Hall of Fame-caliber pitcher based purely on numbers (his 79.5 career WAR is higher than many current Hall of Famers like John Smoltz and Bob Feller). However, he has remained out of the Hall primarily due to controversies surrounding his outspoken political views and post-retirement comments, which led him to ask to be removed from the writers’ ballot in 2021.
