Charlton is most famous for being one-third of the “Nasty Boys” trio alongside Rob Dibble and Randy Myers.
The 1990 World Series: This group was the engine behind the Reds’ “wire-to-wire” championship season. They were known for mid-90s fastballs and an intimidating presence. In the 1990 World Series sweep of the Oakland A’s, the trio didn’t allow a single earned run.
“The Genius”: Unlike his “Nasty” counterparts, Charlton was nicknamed “The Genius” by teammates because he held three degrees from Rice University.
The Scioscia Collision: In a legendary 1990 play, Charlton (a pitcher) rounded third and intentionally barreled into Dodgers catcher Mike Scioscia to settle a team grudge. He knocked the ball loose, scored, and cemented his reputation as the toughest man in the bullpen.
Charlton had three separate stints with the Mariners and became a fan favorite in the Pacific Northwest.
1995 “Refuse to Lose”: After returning from Tommy John surgery, he was a key part of the 1995 team that saved baseball in Seattle, serving as the closer during their miraculous late-season run and playoff upset of the Yankees.
Like many relievers, injuries and age led him to several teams in the late 90s, including the Phillies, Orioles, Braves, and Devil Rays. While his consistency wavered, his intensity never did.
