In 1989, if you walked into a card shop, Jerome Walton was essentially the “next big thing.” He was the centerpiece of a Chicago Cubs youth movement that felt destined for a dynasty.
While his career didn’t reach the Hall of Fame heights fans expected, he remains a legend in Chicago for one of the most electric rookie seasons in franchise history. The peak of “Jerome-mania” was his 30-game hitting streak, the longest by a rookie since 1945. During that run, he became a national sensation. Fans at Wrigley Field famously used a “Jerome-O-Meter” (a spin-off of the “Shawon-O-Meter” for Shawon Dunston) to track his batting average after every hit.
After 1989, a combination of injuries and the “sophomore slump” slowed his momentum. He eventually left the Cubs in 1992 and spent the next six years as a valuable reserve outfielder for several teams, including Cincinnati Reds, Atlanta Braves: He was part of the 1996 Braves team that reached the World Series, and Tampa Bay Devil Rays.
He still makes regular appearances at Wrigley Field for alumni weekends, where he remains a fan favorite for anyone who remembers the “Magic of ’89.”
