Manufacturer: (Topps) Bowman
Set Size: 484 Cards
Card Size: 2-1/2” x 3-3/4”
Set Notes: For many decades Topps ruled the baseball card industry but the 1989 release marked the first for Bowman since the 1950s. Bowman chose to make the cards a little longer in size this year opposed to the standard 2 1/2 x 3 1/2. Since they are the only major release to do this, it made storing these cards a bit more difficult. The front of the cards feature a high quality player photo, simple Bowman logo at top and a signature style player name over the photo. This made it somewhat difficult to know the player on the card unless you look at the back. Backs had player stats and information in red and black ink. While the set did not have the same draw as 1989 Upper Deck, it still has a good rookie line up and set the stage for future Bowman releases.

Overview of 1989 Bowman Baseball Cards
The 1989 Bowman baseball card set is a significant one in the history of modern baseball card collecting. It marked the return of the Bowman brand, which had been absent since the 1950s, under the ownership of Topps. The set is known for its distinctive design and the inclusion of some of the most sought-after rookie cards of the era.
Card Design and Set Details: The 1989 Bowman set consists of 484 cards, each measuring 2-1/2″ by 3-3/4″, which is slightly larger than the standard baseball card size. The card fronts feature a color player photograph with a facsimile signature and the Bowman logo. The photos are framed in white, giving the cards a clean, classic look. Card backs contain player statistics and other information. The cards were organized alphabetically by team, first for the American League and then the National League.
Key Rookie Cards: The 1989 Bowman set is most famous for its rookie cards, which are highly desirable for collectors. The most valuable card in the set is the rookie card of Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr. (#220). Other notable rookie cards include:
- John Smoltz (#266)
- Gary Sheffield (#142)
- Sandy Alomar Jr. (#454)
- Robin Ventura (#65)
- Steve Finley (#15)
The “Tiffany” Set: In addition to the regular issue, Topps also produced a high-end, limited-edition version of the set known as the 1989 Bowman Tiffany set. These cards were sold exclusively as factory sets to hobby dealers, with an estimated print run of only 6,000 sets.
(Rookiecardprices.com only shows values for regular base set cards. No prices are shown for errors, parallels, subsets, misprints or other cards unless noted.)
The Tiffany cards are identical to the regular cards in design, but they are distinguished by a few key differences including a high-gloss coating on the front. The card backs are printed on a clean, white cardstock, while the regular cards have a grayish-colored back. The Tiffany version of the Ken Griffey Jr. rookie card is particularly valuable and highly sought after by collectors.
