Ray played 10 seasons in MLB (1981–1990) before finishing his professional career with a successful two-year stint in Japan for the Yakult Swallows. He was originally drafted by the Astros but was traded to Pittsburgh in the deal that sent Phil Garner to Houston—a trade that paid off handsomely for the Pirates.
In 1982, Ray played in all 162 games as a rookie. While he narrowly lost the official MLB Rookie of the Year award to Steve Sax, he was named the Sporting News Rookie of the Year.
Ray led the National League in doubles in back-to-back seasons (1983–1984), hitting 38 each year. He was famously tough to fanning, rarely striking out more than 40 times in a season despite over 600 plate appearances. His ability to hit from both sides of the plate made him a versatile leadoff and #2 hitter, finishing his career with a solid .290 batting average.
